UPRISING
-------------------------- AUG 1987 by Le6 Tro5ng Hie61u, VN Consulting Inc.,
62-65 Saunders St., Suite 1B, Rego Park, NY 11374.
In 111 BC, the Chinese armies of Emperor Wu Di defeated the successors of
Trie65u D9a2 and annexed Nam Vie65t. The country became a Chinese
protectorate under the new name of Giao Chi3. The La5c lords maintained
their feudal offices and Chinese administrators were appointed as governors
to rule the country and to introduce Chinese literature, arts and
agricultural techniques. The Vietnamese fiercely resented Chinese political
domination and economic exploitation. They not only guarded their national
identity but also fought to preserve it. In fact, Chinese efforts at forced
Sinicization of the Vietnamese provoked many rebellions against Chinese rule.
In 39 AD, the oppressive rule and injustices of a cruel governor provoked an
armed revolt against the Chinese authorities, led by Tru7ng Tra81c and Tru7ng
Nhi5, daughters of the La5c lord of Vi4nh Phu1. The army of the Tru7ng
sisters displayed military skill in swift attacks that struck devastating
blows at the Chinese garrisons. Tru7ng sisters proclaimed themselves Queens
Tru7ng Nu74 Vu7o7ng, and set up an independent state that stretched from
Hue61 into southern China. Three years later, the Ha1n armies led by general
Ma Yuan, defeated the Vietnamese insurgents. The Tru7ng sisters committed
suicide by throwing themselves into a river.
Another noblewoman, Trie65u Thi5 Chinh, in 284 AD, inspired an uprising that
was quickly suppressed. Wearing golden armor and riding an elephant, she led
men into battle. Resisting to the end, she committed suicide rather than
surrender at the age of twenty-three. She is remembered by her words of
defiance: "I want to rail against the wind and the tide, kill the whales in
the sea, sweep the whole country to save the people from slavery, and I
refuse to be abused."
The Tru7ng sisters and Lady Trie65u exemplify the unique status of women in
Vietnamese society. They could inherit land, serve as trustees of ancestral
cults and share their husbands' property. The fall of the Tru7ng sisters
marked the beginning of direct Chinese overlordship in Vie65t Nam. Chinese
administrators replaced most former local officials. D9o6ng So7n
civilization ended and the feudal La5c lords faded into history.
